Loss of Sovereignty?

  • 1000 years ago the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of Britain joined together.
  • This formed a united country with shared sovereignty, now called England.
  • 400 years ago, Elizabeth 1 made King James of Scotland her heir.
  • James formed a united kingdom with shared sovereignty, now called Great Britain.

  • 25 years ago, the government of Elizabeth 2 joined the United Kingdom to a domain with shared sovereignty, known as the European Economic Community or "Common Market".
  • This is now called the European Union.

  • British citizens now have wider rights and are free to live, work and own property anywhere in the European Union.
  • We are citizens of a common market area that has a population 8 times that of the United Kingdom.
  • The UK remains a separate country, with a parliament, a Queen and Commonwealth membership.
  • So why are some people claiming to be worried about "loss of sovereignty"?
