Council refuses to support the 'Axe the Tax' campaign.

10 Dec 2003

Epsom & Ewell's RA led Council rejected a motion proposed by the Lib Dems that a letter should be sent to the deputy prime minister John Prescott in support of replacing Council Tax with a system based upon ability to pay.

Councillor Colin Taylor, leader of the Lib Dem group said afterwards "I reminded them of the massive public support for the 'Axe the Tax' petition, and the backing of Independents elsewhere for the campaign, but they had clearly been told how to vote by their party leaders."

Both the Labour group and the Conservative group also voted not to oppose the unpopular Council Tax system.
